The sports competitions at Ternopil National Medical University were frequently held in the pre-war period, but security during the pandemic imposed some limitations. Today, the Student Parliament of TNMU is gradually restoring this tradition. On February 16, 2023, the TNMU Table Tennis Tournament took place. Everyone could take part after previous registration.

The students of Ternopil National Medical University won the championship which was held in the gym of our university on Kotsiubynskyi Street. In total, more than 40 future doctors took part in it.

The TNMU sports hall was full of competitive emotions and also quite cosy because of a friendly atmosphere there. The thrill of competing in sports is one of the best forms of recreation. It was obvious that the students missed such events.

The fight for the first prise was intense and fierce. Vladyslav Siomko, Pavlo Trufanov, and Kostiantyn Karaziia won in the tournament.

The winners received prizes, medals and diplomas.

The Table Tennis Tournament was organized by Oleksandr Mehedok, the Head of the Student Parliament, Sviatoslav Flinta, the head of the Leisure Sector, and other members of the Student Parliament. Information support for the competition was provided by Sofia Berehuliak.

After the lifting of quarantine restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the winners of the traditional online chess tournaments of I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University “TNMU Arena” were awarded on February 8, 2021.

Professor Mykhailo Korda, the Rector of TNMU, congratulated the students and presented the awards: “I wish you further victories, good games and, most importantly, I hope that the tournament will continue to unite our chess players. I want our students, young talents to have the opportunity to constantly improve their game and enjoy participating in chess battles.”

Mykhailo Yakymchuk, an intern dentist, won in the online tournament TNMU ARENA, which took place on November 15, 2020; Oleksandr Ivaniuk, a fifth-year student of the Faculty of Medicine was the second; Ibrahim Ibikunle, second-year student of the International Students Faculty – the third.

On April 11, 2021 in the game “Chess Spring 2021 Arena” Olexandr Ivaniuk (group MM-507) was the first, Mikhailo Yakymchuk (intern dentist) – the second; Muhammad Talha (group IM 230) – the third.

According to the results of the online tournament “Chess winter 2021 Arena”, which took place on December 2, 2021, the prizes were taken by:

1st prize – Maxym Derlytsia, a second-year student of the Faculty of Medicine;

2nd prize – Ibrahim Ibikunle, a third-year student of the International Students Faculty,

3rd place – Shubham Samrat, a first-year student of the Faculty of Medicine.

Oleksandr Ivaniuk, a sixth-year medical student (MM-607), said he had been playing chess since school.

“The winner is the one who thinks strategically, thinks ahead and sees combinations that others do not see. I am sure that the skills gained during the games help me become a good, attentive doctor in the future. I am glad and grateful to our management and organizers for the opportunity to improve our skills within our university,” said Olexandr.

We congratulate the winners and recognise all the participants for joining the tournaments.

On December 18, 2021, the European Ballroom Dancing Championship (IDSA European Championship) took place in Poland. Yulia Zubnina, a student of I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University and her partner Yevhen Chervatiuk won in their age category “Youth 1” (10 dances). The girl is studying at the Faculty of Medicine, specialty General Medicine.

Yulia is a multiple champion and winner of national and international competitions in ballroom dancing. Yulia started her career at the age of 6, and in 2020 she won the high title of Master of Sports of Ukraine in sports dancing.

For a long time the Nigerian Students’ Union of Ternopil National Medical University and the Nigerian Students Union of Ivano Frankivsk have been cooperating closely at the level of leaders of both public associations, and also always maintain strong relations between all members of the fellowship. From time to time they visit both cities and organize joint events.

Thanks to this close cooperation, a unique event was held – footballl competitions between the teams of Ternopil and Ivano-Frankivsk.

The first game was at the sports complex at 50 Bilohirska Street on Sunday the 27th of June at 4 pm. The Ivano team were on time and geared up for the meeting with their team bus. There were a lot of emotions and “hot” game moments during the match. On this day, the competition ended with a score of 2-0 in favour of the Ternopil Berkut (Golden Eagle) team.

Subsequently, the Students Union of Nigeria of Ternopil National Medical University and the National Union of Ghana of Ternopil Students organized a joint match in honour of this year’s graduates, which took place on the same field.

There were many fans as many students wanted to watch a match between two strong football teams on the African continent. The players represented two countries: Ghana and Nigeria. Each member of the team tried his best to make these competitions at a high level and give the audience unforgettable emotions. The result of the match was a draw – 1 : 1.

The graduates expressed their gratitude to the organizers of football competitions for the opportunity to enter the playing field for the last time, to keep vivid memories in their hearts and feel part of a large student family.

On January 31 – February 2, 2020, Junior Chess Championship was held. 28 chess players participate in this intellectual game, 21 of them have reached the finish line. The competition was held at the Avangard Chess and Checkers Club.

The tournament was successfully attended by a student of TNMU Faculty of Dentistry Mykhailo Yakymchuk, who fulfilled the norm of the first category. Also, Yurii Kovenko (fifth-year student of the Faculty of Dentistry) and Nazar Netsiuk (second-year student of the Faculty of Medicine) participated in the Championship. They have gained valuable experience and inspiration for future victories. Our team has started preparing for regional student sports games.

On January 28-30, 2020, the Rector’s Cup Basketball Tournament was held at Ternopil National Medical University Sports Complex. It was attended by 12 teams vying for victory according to the Olympic system.

In the semifinal and final games, teams of the Faculty of Dentistry (5th-year students) and Medicine (4th-year students) fought for the 3-4 prizes, teams of the Faculty of Medicine (5th-year students) and International Students’ Faculty (4th-year students) fought for the 1-2 prizes.

The first prize was won by a team of the International Students’ Faculty. The fifth-year students of the Faculty of Medicine won the second prize. The third and fourth prizes were awarded to the teams of the Faculty of Dentistry.

The Cup Tournament was organized by Nazarii Savchuk, a 5th-year student of the Faculty of Medicine, the head of the leisure department.

Maxim Levitsky, a first-year student of I.Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University took part in the Ukrainian Kickboxing Championship among students. The competition took place in Kharkiv on September 25-30, 2019.

Our student has won the 1st prize in the weight class up to 69 kg, fulfilled the standard of the master of sports of Ukraine and joined the student team of Ukraine with further participation in the World Student Games. This result contributes to enhancing the overall prestige of Ternopil National Medical University among the student community, promotes a healthy lifestyle and sports, and encourages the development of athletic skills of the young generation.

In total, more than 400 athletes participated in the competition. The Ternopil region was represented by 16 sportsmen. The TNMU Kickboxing team has existed for 25 years (since 1994). More than 30 TNMU students are involved in this sport today.

The men’s volleyball team of Ternopil State Medical University on March 26-28, 2018took part in the II Open Ternopil University Games. The competition was organized by the Department for Family, Youth Policy and Sports of Ternopil City Council and the Ternopil Regional Committee on Physical Education and Sport of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. Six teams competed in the volleyball tournament: TNPU -1, TNPU-2, TNEU -1, TNEU-2, TSMU,  and TNTU.

In the group tournament, our volleyball team played against TNEU-1 and TNPU-1. Our team bested TNEU, however they lost to TNPU, taking second group place. As a result, TSMU competed for the third place with the team TNPU-2, which placed 2nd in their group. The third place game was intense tense. Students of Ternopil State Medical University won 2 – 1.

Their coach Oleksandr Belousko said:  “The players had followed the instructions and advise I gave them during the break, and as a result they reversed the course of the game and won the second party, and then the decisive third. Their overall third place was well deserved. Other teams coaches shared with me that this year our team has become a real discovery and worthy competitor among other universities of our region. The winner of this year’s competition was the TNPU-1 team, which bested their perennial rivals TNEU in a spectacular match. I want to once again thank the players of our team for the determination and courage they have demonstrated in the arena and for believing in themselves first and foremost”.

TSMU team players which competed in the University Games are Serhii Petrushenko, Oleksandr Kosovskyi, Oleksandr Strybulevych, Andrii Stakhiv, Ivan Oskoskalo, Mykhailo Havryliuk (Faculty of Medicine), Makar Horschar (Faculty of Dentistry), Volodymyr Lysak (Institute of Nursing), Hamid Omar Abdulrab and Eduard Svamberk (International Students’ Faculty). Ihor Varanytsia was the team captain.

The team withes to thank the university administration for their support, and also to the women’s volleyball team, who come to cheer all matches of the men’s team, and who took the third place in their University Games tournament.

II Open University Games of the city of Ternopil organized by the Department for Family, Youth and Sports of Ternopil City Council and Ternopil Regional Branch of the Committee on Physical Education and Sport of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine started on March 6, 2018. Ternopil State Medical University teams take part in basketball, football, volleyball, table tennis, basketball (3 by 3), chess, swimming, and arm wrestling competitions.

Our chess team was the first to test their mettle. TSMU, TNPU TNEU-1 and TNEU-2 teams competed in a team and personal championship. Students from Ternopil State Medical University took the I place, leaving behind traditionally strong TNEU-1 and TNEU-2. Our team includes Mykhailo Yakymchuk, Yurii Kovenko (Faculty of Dentistry), Uliana Soltys, Natalia Boiko, Oleksandr Ivaniuk (Faculty of Medicine) and Dekri Mindo (International Students’ Faculty).

Mykhailo Yakymchuk took the first place on the first board, Dekri Mindo and Yurii Kovenko the first place on the second board, and Uliana Soltys was the second on the first board. Altogether, TSMU team scored 12 points. The tournament took place in the chess club of Ternopil National Economic University.

Ternopil Medical University team is coached by Assistant Professor of the Department of Physical Rehabilitation, Human Health and Physical Education Liubov Novakova.

For two weeks in a row, on weekends (3-4 and 10-11 February 2018), an international football tournament took place at the sports complex of Ternopil State Medical University. Twelve student teams took part in the competition. The teams included student athletes from Iraq, Egypt, Ghana, Nigeria, India, Morocco, Cameroon, and Ukraine.

The competition for the main prize was intense, and as a result of it the BlackTeam, which included students from Ghana, took the first place. Egyptian-Iraq-Morocco team  placed second, while the team of Ukrainian students took bronze. The MVP cup was awarded to Ashraf Amasha.

Professor Petro Selskyi, dean of the International Students’ Faculty, presented the awards. Dr. Selskyi wished all participants successful training, professional growth and many new happy student life experiences. He emphasized the importance of being active in public and charitable activities as well as in sports. Such events help to develop friendships and find a common language for people from different cultures.

Deputy director of the Center for Academic Work and Cultural Development, associate professor Olena Pokryshko also greeted the participants, giving special thanks to the initiators of the tournament, Younes Hanafi and Arshbeer Sandhu.
